The point-to-point route circled Dodo island, sending runners off at 11:30 from the 50-kilometer mark of the concurrent 100-kilometer event.
The 8-hour time limit enforced a strict standard, tighter than 84% of 50k races and more generous than just 16%. Entrants had to sustain an overall pace faster than 9.6 minutes per kilometer across the full 50 kilometers of pavement to beat the clock.
